A 401(k) is an employer-sponsored retirement plan the company designs and administers (often with a provider and advisor support). CalSavers is California’s state-facilitated IRA program for employers that do not already offer a qualified plan. A 401(k) gives you more savings room, an employer match, and a benefit people actually compare when they take a job. NP Benefit Services can help you compare which path fits your workforce.

Employer money

CalSavers. No employer contributions. Employees fund it alone.
Tax choice
401(k). Pre-tax, Roth, or both. The company decides what the plan offers.
CalSavers. Roth only. Contributions are after tax.
Who designs it

CalSavers. The state program. You register and deduct payroll.
2026 IRS limits. A workplace 401(k) is generally how California employers meet the retirement-plan rule instead of CalSavers. Confirm what applies to your company, then start the plan.
